Katelyn Burns is a freelance journalist based in Washington, DC. She was the first openly transgender Capitol Hill reporter in U.S. history. She grew up in New England and covers politics, sports, LGBTQ+ issues, and reproductive health policy.
Burns is a parent of two and currently lives in Washington, D.C.
Burns was the federal policy reporter for Rewire.News, where she covered the U.S. Congress including legislation and federal policy issues. Previously she was also a freelance journalist covering breaking transgender news for them. and had bylines for The Washington Post, Elle, VICE, Teen Vogue, Vox, Esquire, Playboy, and many others.
She was also a reporting fellow for Everyday Feminism, composing a series on toxic call-out culture in online activist spaces in addition to a series on the trials and tribulations faced by trans people in accessing employment.
Burns is not one to sit idly by allowing disparaging hate-speech against the LGBTQ+ community; and in recent months took to the internet to take J.K. Rowling to task for her gender-critical tweets in support of Maya Forstater, a researcher and feminist who had been fired by her employer for her online involvement in anti-trans campaigns.
Burns is currently keeping us up-to-date on news about the current White House administration, where the Presidential candidates for the 2020 Election stand on life-changing trans issues, pending trans-centric legislation across the states, as well as how the COVID-19 virus is affecting the trans community.
